A name has surfaced of the gunman, who shot and killed a Canadian reservist at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, and then himself was shot to death by Parliament’s sergeant-at arms.

According to several U.S. media outlets, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was Canadian born and in his early 30s.

After the shooting at the War Memorial, the gunman then ran into Parliament’s Centre Block and began firing somewhere between 30 and 50 shots according to MPs, senators and other witnesses before he too was shot.

It remains unclear if there were any other gunmen.

The solider, who was killed was a reservist from Hamilton’s Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders – Corporal Nathan Cirillo.

Prime Minister Harper has not yet made any public comments.

He’s spoken on the phone with President Obama who says ”we’re all shaken by it.”

The Canadian embassy in Washington and American one in Ottawa are locked down.

Two planned events in Toronto involving the prime minister and Nobel peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai were cancelled.

The police are on heightened alert.

Chief Bill Blair says while there are no immediate threats, starting now and in the coming days, you’ll see more officers on the subway system and in public spaces and various public institutions like Queen’s Park, City Hall, the courts, consulates as well as government and military facilities.

Meanwhile tonight’s Senators-Leafs game in Ottawa has been postponed.

No word when the game will be played.
